Washington Commanders release depth chart
But, it's not written in stone
Depth charts are often not worth the paper they’re printed on with some teams letting the PR man do it.
That said, the Washington Commanders released their first depth chart for Friday’s preseason opener at New England.
Receiver Terry McLaurin and right guard Sam Cosmi are noted with injured signs. Nick Allegretti is Cosmi’s backup while Michael Gallup is McLaurin’s. Right tackle is Andrew Wylie “OR” first-rounder Josh Conerly. There are two starting tight ends in Zac Ertz and John Bates. Rookie running back Jacoby “Bill” Croskey-Merritt is rated fifth as the camp sleeper.
Defensively, second-rounder Trey Amos is one of three starting corners. Basically, no surprises on the defense.
Special teams has Austin Ekeler as kick returner and K.J. Osborn as punt returner.
Notes:
There’s no live streaming of Wednesday’s Commanders-Patriots joint practice. You’ll just have to read about it. Man, like stone tablet days.
Coach Dan Quinn keeps throwing hope Cosmi will be ready for the season opener. That’s a miraculous speedy recovery for a torn ACL in January. But like RG3 said, “All in for opening day.”
Guard Brandon Coleman (leg) missed Monday’s practice and uncertain for Wednesday’s practice at New England. McLaurin (ankle) remains on PUP with no return timetable.
The Commanders are sponsoring 127 girls flag football teams around Washington over the next two years. Given no pads, it’s only $1 million overall. The NFL is big on growing this fan base.
Live chat on YouTube 8:15 Mondays on YouTube
Substack readers may not have caught my live act. Every Monday, you can ask whatever from Commanders to pizza reviews to history during my one hour live show via YouTube. I’m a little later than normally 8 p.m. because there’s a birthday party at the house. Will I bring the live chat to Substack one day? You never know.
Chaos in the Cornfields?
Washington weather was a 10. If I wasn’t catching up yard work, I went to lawnmower races in Clements, Md. About 1,000 people attended the national championship where some reached speeds of 60 mph or so and ages ranged from 5 to 90-something. As a longtime horse racing writer, I know lots about horse power.
I couldn’t tell you who won or even raced, but beer was $4 and the hot dog was solid. “Chaos in the Cornfields” of Southern Maryland definitely showed I moved to a much more rural area about one hour south of Washington where the Amish have big farms and even gentleman farmers like myself grow corn.
Quote I liked:
“I've been through three team names, its two owners. This is my third coaching staff. So, I've kind of seen the evolution of this place. And it's just been a blessing to just be a part of this journey while I'm on my own journey”

Finally:
We’re 20 weeks into 52 Questions for God where I ask questions of my old friend Pastor Chris Bryan of things we never discuss in church, but wish we did. We don’t pass the plate, but the show airs every Sunday and is only a few minutes. Next week is does God care who wins games? The answer surprised me. Anyway, here’s yesterday’s video on whether baptism is needed to enter Heaven.
Thanks for reading. Tell others. Seeya soon.
